Apart from format support and blatant KIRFage, there’s usually not much to distinguish one Chinese “MP4” player from another, so Newman’s L1200 PMP is quite the standout with its 12 megapixel camera. Mounted cell-style on the edge of the device alongside a flash, the cam swivels 180 degrees to take regular shots or 30fps video of your smiling face. Other features include a 3-inch QVGA touchscreen, SD expansion, non-specific AVI video support, and a variety of shooting modes and setting for that cam. Not much else is known, but at just $132, it’s worth a splurge if you ever see it outside of China.

You may have seen the Eye-Fi, launched this week, nearly a year and a half since we first heard about it. If you’re just catching up on the news, it’s basically a WiFi-enabled SD card (and accompanying web service) used to transparently and wirelessly transfer photos from your camera to your computer and/or a variety of photo sharing sites. Sounds like an great idea in theory, it turns out that the Eye-Fi is, in its current release, an answer seeking a question. Read on.

We really stoked to finally have gotten our grubby meat hooks on Sony’s latest DSLR, the Alpha a700. The first thing you notice: even without a battery pack, flash, or massive lens, the thing is as heavy as a friggin brick — close to two pounds with the stock lens. The photographs we started shooting, though, were phenomenal. We won’t patronize the extremely knowledgeable camera geeks in the house by trying to wax photographic, but if you get a chance to play around with one of these cameras, we highly recommend spending a bit of time with it.

Yes, as of this afternoon the DSC-T200 and DSC-T70 we saw the other day are official (for the US, that is), but now we’re onto the next Sony thing: the DSC-H3, contending with the sub-hybrid welterweights. This 8 megapixel shooter’s got a 10x zoom, 2.5-inch screen, OIS, sensitivity up to ISO 3200, HD component out (with not-included $40 cable), and a list price of $300 for September launch. More pictures of the H3 and its point and shoot brethren below.

It’s been a tick since we’ve seen a Chinese handset this obscure, and while the PS3-playing A816 and Surround Sound Phone sure had their moments, this laugher takes things to a whole ‘nother platform. The LV 2008 supposedly offers up a 3.5-inch LCD, an array of speakers, multimedia player, voice recorder, Bluetooth, an e-dictionary, and USB connectivity, but the standout “feature” here is the attachable zoom lens. Yep, it looks like we’ve got a DSLR phone on our hands here folks, and while we’re sure that that optical zoom is nice, the paltry 1.3-megapixel sensor just drags the whole package down. But hey, for around $130, why not pick one up just for kicks? More unbelievable pictures after the break.

Olympus is experimenting with a new lens capable of a 360-degree horizontal projection or capture. Better yet, they seem to have bunged it together with video processing equipment. According to Google’s translation robots, CCD-based projectors and cameras (pictured) fitted with the new “axial symmetrical free curved surface lens” are entering into a period of trial manufacture. Combining a 45-degree vertical field of vision, the Olympus camera would be ideally suited for ceiling mounted surveillance while the projector would likely be little more than a novelty in rev-1. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for an English translation before delving too deeply into this. So why not clickity-click through for more pictures while you wait.

Sea & Sea’s last offering, while novel, wasn’t exactly the power-packed gizmo that serious underwater photographers could confidently take beneath the waves, but the firm’s latest device is apparently aiming to change that. The DX-1G housing and 10-megapixel 1G camera claims to be the “world’s most advanced compact underwater digital camera system to date,” and includes a 24 to 72-millimeter lens, 1/1.75-inch CCD sensor, 3x optical zoom, and a practically worthless 4x digital zoom. This wannabe DSLR also has quite a bit in common with Ricoh’s GX-100, and while it’s not noted if the underwater housing will slide right over Ricoh’s shooter, it couldn’t hurt to try. Unfortunately, it seems like you’ll be buying both to start with, which means that you’ll be laying down $1,049 for the liquid-shunning set.

We’re not sure what’s going on with Sony, but it looks like they’ve also got 100GB HDR-SR8 Handycam which they’ve loosed outside of the US. That’s 38-hours of LP-mode recording, kids when this thing ships in July. Europeans and Canadian’s at least, have dibs on the SR8 in addition to the same 1080i camcorders loosed in The States: the crazy small HDR-CX7, the 40GB HDR-SR5, and the 60GB HDR-SR7. Other than the bigger disk, the SR8 is feature identical to the SR7. What gives Sony? Of course, we’ve seen our Canadian brethren receive special treatment from Sony before. Anyway, next time you cross the Detroit border for smokes and teenage drinking, don’t forget to pick up a few US$1670 SR8s for your pals at Engadget. Thanks.

The word “booth” is a bit of a misnomer when it comes to describing the area filled with Sony gizmos at CES — let’s just say that the square footage occupied by the consumer electronics giant takes up a fairly egregious percentage of the entire Center Hall. But hey, we can hang with that — you don’t have too many chances in life to witness a ginormous tower made out of LCD TVs. Click on for some highlights from the marathon we ran.

Sony updates their consumer DVD camcorder line with minor upgrades across the board, from the low-end DCR-DVD108 (pictured, right) to the high-end DVD508, which updates the DVD505. Nothing you’ll need to write home about, here — some upgraded lenses in the DVD108 and DVD308 and a Dual Record feature for the DVD408 and DVD508, allowing users to simultaneously shoot stills and record video — but all the new cams do add a handy dual-layer feature, allowing you to double your recording time by writing to both dual-layer DVD+-R/RW. The DCR-DVD108 and DVD308 will ship in February of ought seven at $450 and $550, respectively, while you can expect the two higher-end models in March for $700 for the DVD408 and $900 for the DVD508.
