Polaroid and Zink develop Digital Instant Mobile Photo Printer

Filed under:

We’d heard through the grapevine that the Zink portable printer camera would be getting boxed up and sent out to eager customers late this year, but now it seems as though Polaroid has jumped in for a bit of the action. Realistically, you shouldn’t be too surprised that the former king of instant photography is syncing up with Zink, and we must say, this whole partnership conjures up some pretty fond memories of shakin’ snapshots in tense anticipation as we waited for the scene to develop. Nostalgia aside, the firm’s Digital Instant Mobile Photo Printer does indeed sport the Zink logo, and sure enough, it produces borderless 2- x 3-inch color prints instantly when fed images from a digicam or cellphone. We don’t have a firmed up release date in front of us or anything, but all signs are pointing to soon — very soon.

Samsung’s 8 megapixel CMOS sensor for phones — another world’s first

You know all those 3 megapixel cameraphones out there? Well, they’re about to achieve 8 megapixel ubiquity. Samsung just announced availability of their 8 megapixel CMOS sensor which shares roughly the same 10.5 x 11.5 x 9.4-mm girth of its 3 megapixel cuz. Just make sure you’ve got plenty of light to frame those shots if you’re expecting anything close to a quality image.

Green House’s Gaudi cam is nothing special

Filed under:

Nothing standout here, but that doesn’t mean this little flash-based camera from Green House isn’t right for someone. The Gaudi sports an SD card slot for capturing your VGA video, QVGA video and 5 megapixel stills, with a 1.7-inch screen to preview it all. Gaudi maxes out on 2GB SD cards, and there’s nothing fancy happening in codec land: video is recorded in AVI. That said, this thing goes for a mere 13,800 Yen ($125 US), so if you’re in Japan and need a nice “disposable” tourist-cam… well, you could probably just use your phone and save on the bulk, so forget the whole deal.

PhotoVu’s 17-inch RSS-enabled digital photo frame, the 1765W

We’ve seen a few WiFi and RSS enabled digital photo frames from PhotoVu in the past, but they’ve all been overly large for our city-sized living spaces, which is why we’re happy to see the somewhat more reasonable 17-inch 1765w from PhotoVu make its debut. The 16:10 frame reads all the obvious digital camera formats, but unlike most other frames, it includes plugins for popular apps like Picasa and iPhoto that let you handle file management directly inside your photo app, instead of having to play the scale-and-export game. Like all of PhotoVu’s other frames, the 1765w also features an RSS reader and web server for completely remote administration, and integration with services like Flickr, SmugMug, .mac. Of course, all this hotness is going to cost you — the 1765w runs a steep $699 direct from PhotoVu.

Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-T2 reviewed

Filed under:

CNET has a review of Sony’s new Cyber-shot DSC-T2 up, and the verdict seems to be “well above average,” with a 7.4 score. The case is bit of the podgy side, although if you don’t mind that it’s well designed otherwise with a hefty lens protector taking up the front and a large 2.7-inch touchscreen taking up the back. That touchscreen has problems, with the review pointing to responsiveness issues. The 4GB internal storage is also nice, but the ridiculous proprietary cable means if you lose the one in the box during your vacay, you’re screwed. Image quality and performance is nothing to go crazy over, and you’ll probably be happy with it if you’ve used an equivalently priced digicam recently. Overall, the flaws in the integrated storage and the touchscreen mean this is a bit of a letdown. Go for the T200 instead.

Submerged camera holds functional memory card two years after accident

Filed under:

After capsizing in the partially frozen waters at Kejimkujik National Park, the Collins family was far too busy being alive to worry over a silly sunken camera. As fate would have it, the ole Canon Powershot that was lost eventually turned up, as a park maintenance worker managed to spot the device sitting aimlessly upon a rock. Granted, the body was in fairly deplorable shape after braving the elements for two solid years, but the memory card tucked within seemed to be relatively unharmed. Upon testing it out, the employee found some 300 pictures taken on the day in which Mr. & Mrs. Collins nearly perished, and every one of ‘em was in good-as-new condition. Eventually, the couple managed to pick up the camera / card and bring home those slightly eerie memories, but no one ever found the loner who snapped up the couple’s misplaced cellphone and ran up calls to Zimbabwe ’til the battery died.

Sanyo’s Xacti VPC-HD1000 camcorder gets reviewed

Filed under:

Sanyo’s line of Xacti camcorders have traditionally looked mighty fine on paper, but for one reason or another, expectations haven’t exactly been met on the previous iterations. The firm’s latest pistol-grip device yet again looked superb at a glance, but TrustedReviews found that the VPC-HD1000 still wasn’t able to live up to its claims. On the upside, reviewers found the design to be “much improved,” and the Full HD recording abilities were drooled over as well. Still, the crew couldn’t help but be disappointed in the paltry four-megapixel CMOS sensor, and while it did perform “better than its predecessors” as a camcorder, the optical zoom was tagged as “slow,” colors seemed slightly oversaturated and you’ll still need “plenty of light” in order to get halfway decent results. Furthermore, it was noted that quick changes in scenery caused noticeable pixilation, and shooting in low-light introduced “a lot” of grain. Overall, the HD1000 wasn’t totally slammed nor lifted up on a pedestal, but we’d probably hold off on this unless you’re cool with a “jack of two trades, but master of neither.”

Computer Memories photo frame stores more than a 5 x 7

Although this item doesn’t fall into the digital photo frame classification per se, there’s plenty of 1s and 0s surrounding the 5- x 7-inch photo within. This clever creation features a relatively vanilla wooden frame, a glamorous stock shot of silhouettes on a beach and numerous sticks of random access memory adorning the borders. Yes, this here frame can hold “megabytes of loving memories,” but let’s be honest, you’re buying this for the conversation factor. Or, at least you will when it returns to stock. Of course, we’re pretty sure the mildly seasoned DIY’er could assemble one of these without much fuss, so click on through for one more angle if you’re ready to roll up those sleeves and get to it.

Pentax Optio Z10 gets reviewed

Filed under:

Pentax’s Optio Z10 digital camera has been out for a little while now, but it just recently landed into the hand of the folks at Photography Blog, who’ve now given the cam their usual review treatment. From the looks of it, however, this one appears to be a decidedly mixed bag, with the camera winning some points for its 7x optical zoom (despite its pocketable size), but leaving them rather unimpressed overall. Most significantly, they say the image quality is “severely hampered by noise,” a problem that apparently crops up even at ISO 200, and becomes a “pixellated mess” by ISO 3200. The so-called “digital shake reduction” also appears to be about as useful as a digital zoom, and the face recognition feature doesn’t seem to have fared much better either. On the upside, the camera’s focusing is reportedly “fast and accurate,” even in low-light conditions, and there is that 7x zoom. Unless that’s your top priority, however, it seems like you can probably do better elsewhere.
