Considering that UK traffic wardens are already wielding handheld camcorders to record their daily activities, it’s not too shocking to hear that the LAPD will soon be implementing a similar, albeit more extreme, version of employee recording. In the wake of the “MacArthur Park melee,” the department’s chief has stated that a camera crew will now “follow officers through major incidents, recording their actions from the early roll call to the after-incident report.” Supposedly, this all-seeing crew will ensure that police remain on their best behavior, and moreover, it promises that videoed evidence will always be available in the case of a discrepancy. As if that wasn’t enough Big Brother for you, the station has also announced plans to equip a helicopter with a long-range HDTV camera that will beam back images to a command station. At this point, they might as well yank the UK’s hovering drones too and save the effort.

As NASA awaits the newly rescheduled launch of its latest mission, Microsoft has been busy creating a “3D montage” of the space shuttle Endeavour. According to the team, this venture will enable individuals around the globe to “view 3D images of Endeavour and surrounding buildings at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida before it launches into space.” The environments are being constructed using hundreds of snapshots and an imaging technology dubbed Photosynth, which stitches together 2D digital images to give a three-dimensional view “that can be navigated and explored in a highly intuitive manner.” This go ’round, it seems that the goal was simply to provide a wow-factor to remote onlookers, but both entities are reportedly “looking into ways of using this new technology to support future missions.” Check out the results here.

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Apple_Updates_Mac’; Apple unveiled an update to its .Mac package of subscription online apps today. Most notably, .Mac now integrates with the just-announced iPhoto ‘08, offering synchronization between iPhoto and a web-based online gallery viewable “in any browser you like” (we should certainly hope so!). Oh, and it integrates with the iPhone, too, via a new “Send to Web Gallery” feature on the phone that — you guessed it — will upload pics snapped with the handset straight to your online gallery. The synchronization is two-way, meaning that other folks can upload pics straight to your gallery and they’ll sync with the iPhone as well. Videos don’t get left out of the equation, either; Web Galleries and the iPhone will both support ‘em.

Here in America, we don’t take our home security systems lightly, but for those in Japan, it appears that they haven’t resorted to installing sensor-triggered weapons in their windows just yet. The HC-1000 camera can be controlled via the internet or a FOMA mobile, and allows users to take a peek at what’s going on without actually being on the premises. The device sports a three-megapixel CMOS sensor, Ethernet port, 802.11a/b/g, 2x digital zoom, and a QVGA video mode to boot. Additionally, a “defense support” system can enable the piercing siren to let loose a wail, and the built-in microphone / speaker can even open up two-way communication between you and your home-wrecker (or faraway relative). The HC-1000 itself will run you a modest ¥29,400 ($247), but those looking to totally lock down their dwelling can spend up to ¥141,750 ($1,191) for an elaborate whole home system.

We’ve already had a
few indications that Canon would be releasing its still-unannounced
EOS 40D DSLR sooner or later, but it looks like that day could now be fast approaching, at least according to this shot supposedly taken of a Best Buy computer. As you can see above (if you squint hard enough), it lists the EOS 40D with an “in-stock date” of 09-02-2007 and, according to the person that took the picture, it’ll retail for $1599.99. The non-Canon website Canon-EOS-40D.com (linked below) also turned up a shot similar to the one above, and has some rumored specs for the camera to boot, including a 10.2 megapixel sensor, 2.5-inch LCD, DIGIC III image processor, and an ISO range from 100 to 3200, among other desirable features. As for whether those will actually pan out, we’ll just have to wait and see.

We’re still not entirely convinced how effective Zink’s portable digital camera / printer combo will be, but at least now we have an expected ship date. Zink has updated their site to say that their “digital polaroid” will be shipping in late 2007, which will hopefully mean a fall release date. Zink has also released some of the Integrated Digital Camera and Printer’s specifications, which aren’t altogether that interesting — it has a 7 Megapixel CCD, 2-inch display, and SD memory card slot, just so ya know. All we care about is how good the printer is on this chunky combo unit.

Worried your kids haven’t been completely indoctrinated with the Disney universe and its philosophy of watch, buy, and buy? Well fear not, parents, because the cartoon-kingpin has got your back (and your pocketbook). If your tweens have been looking for something to do, and playing stickball just ain’t cuttin’ the mustard, maybe they need the Disney Flix Video Camera (pictured), a tween-targeted digital video camera that comes bundled with Disney Director, which lets the little rapscallions star in their own Disney movie. The company is also offering LCD TVs, such as the 15-inch High School Musical model, which resembles a locker and rocks 1024 x 768 resolution (the displays also come in Disney Princess, Hannah Montana, and Pirates of the Caribbean motifs). Additionally, the cartoon-factory is offering docks for use with your iPod which feature alarm clocks and AM/FM tuners, though the Hannah Montana version does double duty as a guitar amp — presumably to use with your Disney guitar. All the products will be available sometime this Fall, but good luck getting your kids to wait patiently.

The bargain-bin-phenom has struck again, and this time it’s the five-megapixel DXG-572V camcorder that’s delivering a lot of promises for an uber-cheap price. ‘Course, we wouldn’t expect the built-in CMOS sensor, 4x digital zoom, white balance adjuster, voice recorder, digital still camera, or “near DVD quality” 640 x 480 MPEG4 / AVI video that this thing captures to win any awards, but those who don’t mind chintzy ought not find any issues with this. Moreover, the unit boasts 32 measly megabytes of internal storage, an SD / MMC expansion slot, USB 2.0 connectivity, and a flip-out LCD screen to boot. If you’re still sold, you can call the DXG-572V yours for just $149.99, and feel free to click on for a couple more angles.

GE sounded pretty cocky when it announced its first entries into the crowded digital camera market earlier this year, with the company’s lead of sales is running around saying things like, “Our aim is to be Number 1 in all aspects - quality, technology, performance and value - and these cameras will do that.” Unfortunately, however, it doesn’t look GE is going to reach that goal as fast as they’d hoped — Photography Blog got their hands on the 8 megapixel E850 model and although the design and price are attractive, the camera itself took “horrible” pictures and suffered from sluggish performance. According to the reviewer, the E850 has “the worst noise performance” he’s ever seen, and the higher ISO settings make “great impressionistic paintings out of your photos.” Ouch. All in all, it looks like you’re better off spending your $200 elsewhere — sorry about that, GE fanboys.

It seems the rumor mill is in full swing for the entire DSLR universe these days, so it makes sense for Sony’s Advanced Amateur Alpha to join the fray. According to an admittedly sketchy source, the specifications from the aforementioned camera have been discovered, so here’s a quick rundown on what to (hopefully) expect. Aside from the 14.4-megapixel sensor, rumor has it that you’ll find a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, NP-FM55H battery, a CompactFlash slot, support for JPEG / RAW image formats, anti red-eye technology, ISO 100 to 3200, and wireless flash support to boot. ‘Course, we wouldn’t bet the farm on any of this just yet, but if you’re interested in delving into dodgy French sites for potential dirt on one of Sony’s forthcoming beasts, you know where to head.
