Windows Live Local SUV spotted in Sacramento

Leave it to Redmond to ante up with a big, gas guzzling SUV for its “street-side view” purposes. Recently caught cruising in Northern California, this hulking Chevy makes Immersive Media’s Google fleet (family mini-van and college grad’s first car) look pretty tame. Now if only they could snap more pics of Ballmer pulling this face. Take another look after the break.

[Thanks, Gabriel H]

HP unveils nine new budget-friendly Photosmart cameras

Filed under:

What’s a Thursday in June without nine new boringcams from HP to be totally underwhelmed by? We can’t think of a better way to spend our morning than to sort through all these mundane Photosmart models, and if you have the patience feel free to join in on the fun. The cameras range from the $80 E337, which features a 5 megapixel sensor and a 1.5-inch LCD, all the way up to the R937 (pictured), sporting a 3.6-inch touchscreen and an 8 megapixel resolution, which goes for $300. In between is a vast wasteland of minor feature bumps and teensy aesthetic tweaks, but we’ve gotta hand it to HP for packing good amount of features into some fairly well priced cameras. Keep reading and all will be revealed.

Man sues over red-light cameras for $3 million

David A. Czech is crazy upset about tickets, so he’s suing the city of Northwood, Ohio, its police department, and an Arizona-based maker of red-light cameras (which automatically snap photos of traffic violations). The suit alleges that the cameras are part of an “unconstitutional ordinance to extort money” put in place by the city, and Mr. Czech (on behalf of himself and 20,000 other “offenders”) is asking for a $3 million payback and an injunction barring use of the cameras. This isn’t the first case of its kind that we’ve seen — and it undoubtedly won’t be the last, considering the recent spate of these systems being utilized across the nation.

[Thanks, Simon]

Sony’s back: shifting from “recovery to profitable growth” — 380 new PS3 games

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/playstation_3/380_PS3_games_announced_by_Sony_return_to_profits’; Howard Stringer — Sony Corp’s CEO and man with the plan — just exited stage-left from Sony’s annual shareholder meeting in Tokyo. To say that the 6,000 attendees were skeptical of said plan would be an understatement given a year of fiscal losses, job cuts, PS3 under-performance (with an eventual Kutaragi dismissal), and an embarrassing and dangerous recall of some 10 million batteries among other missteps. Still, Howard stood strong, assuring investors that Sony has made the swtich from “recovery to profitable growth” and will be a “dominant company” in the digital age. So what’s the plan?

‘Professional gang’ invades Sigma warehouse, grabs plenty

Filed under:

We’re beginning to wonder if someone isn’t adding a little something to the water over in England, as a recent heist of Sigma Imaging’s UK offices makes the country home to the second high-stakes consumer electronics robbery this month. The crooks, which were affectionately dubbed a “professional gang,” reportedly broke into the offices and warehouse of Sigma UK in order to lift “a large quantity” of wares. So much so, in fact, that Sigma has warned that the incident could “temporarily disrupt supply to customers,” but it failed to mention exactly what was stolen. Notably, the culprits must have momentarily forgotten that they were in the surveillance capital of the world, and now police are breaking down CCTV footage in order to garner more details.

Ricoh Caplio GX100 reviewed

Filed under:

The chaps over at PhotograhyBLOG have an extensive (as in six pages) review of the handsome Ricoh Caplio GX100 that we told you about in March. Opinions from the experts concerning this 10 megapixel camera seem largely favorable, with high marks for design, features and ease-of-use, and only a few minor quibbles in the image-quality department. They seemed particularly excited about the Caplio’s use of a RAW storage format, which the competition has apparently been moving away from. But hey, it’s your $700, so if you really want to know all the details, follow the link to the full review.

BenQ renamed QISDA, but still BenQ… huh?

In what appears to be a doomed repeat of Palm, Inc’s name changing and restructuring fiasco, BenQ had donned a new, newer moniker: Qisda. Damn if that doesn’t just drip off the tongue… like a pneumonic cough. The new name, an acronym actually, stands for Quality, Innovation, Speed, Driving, and Achievements, not Quality Inn San Diego Airport regardless of what the all knowing Google thinks. The company’s Chinese name has also changed from “Jia Da” to “Jias Da.” So to break it down for you: BenQ is a wholly owned subsidiary of Qisda (AKA, Jias Da) whose familiar purple logo will continue to appear on Qisda’s self-branded products. Qisda, however, will focus on LCD monitors, projectors, multi-function peripherals, and handset OEM/ODM businesses. The name change gets all official on September, 1st. Hey Qisda, feel free to use the illustration above for your new corporate logo.

Panasonic begins production of world’s first 45nm circuits

While some vendors are out there blowharding their 45nm processes, Panasonic is actually doing something about it. Today, Panasonic started mass production of the world’s first 45nm system LSIs. More specifically, they’ve started manufacturing a 45nm-based UniPhier (Universal Platform for High-quality Image Enhancing Revolution) at their new semicoductor factory in Uozu, Japan. In other words, we’re due to see more powerful A/V gear from Panny capable of processing a pair of 1080p displays in parallel, H.264 encoding, symmetric multi-processing, and high-performance 3D graphics from circuitry consuming about half the power and surface area of traditional 65nm-based processes. Really, what’s not to love?

RedPost unveils DIY digiframe kit with 19-inch LCD

Filed under:

Nah, 19-inch digital photo frames aren’t a newfangled creation, but RedPost Inc. is hoping to add a dash of whateva-you-please to the process by offering up the RedPost/Kit. The self-proclaimed do-it-yourself digiframe kit allows you to order up the device in six colors (including an unfinished iteration for the painters in the crowd), and it even runs a Linux operating system that should please the tinkerers as well. Of course, you’ll also get a 19-inch LCD, 200MHz fanless x86 CPU, 128MB of onboard memory, 802.11b/g WiFi connectivity, and VESA mount compatibility. Still, for $549, you could probably just break away from the quasi-fabricated world altogether and assemble your own for a good bit cheaper.

Pentax celebrates with gold-accented K10D GP DSLR

Filed under:

What do you do if your camera takes home the prestigious Camera Grand Prix 2007 award? Why, you kick out a limited run of 5,000 units to let everyone know about it, that’s what. Pentax is proving quite the celebratory bunch, as it has found yet another reason to don the party hat and unveil a fancy looking (but otherwise standard) K10D. The Grand Prix Package comes with the body, a battery grip, a commemorative strap, and the latest firmware pre-installed, and Pentax even applied a special dark brown rubber to the body to make sure it stood out. Additionally, a few logos and indicators are gilded to signify the limited-edition status, and the prominent serial number on each one completes the package. Don’t expect to snap one up immediately though, as Pentax is keeping the pricing and available deets on the DL for the time being.
