Sony’s HDR-SR5, HDR-SR7, and HDR-CX7 1080i Handycams outed

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Sony_s_Hi_Def_Handycams_outed’; So you liked Sony’s HDR-SR1 and HDR-UX1 did ya? Well check out these images sent to us by a trusted insider (and confirmed by another) clearly depicting two new HD camcorders: the HDR-SR5 and HDR-SR7. Both camcorders feature built-in hard disk drives, 2.7-inch widescreen LCDs, VZ Vario Sonnar 10x optical zoom lenses, a built-in flash, 5.1ch audio recording, and a 5 hour battery. The SR5 packs a 1/3-inch ClearVid CMOS sensor which captures 4 megapixel stills and 1080i, AVCHD video back to its 40GB disk. The SR7 brings a 1/2.9-inch ClearVid CMOS sensor for 6.1 megapixel stills to its bigger 60GB disk as well as optical Super SteadyShot for superior stabilization when recording HD video. Essentially, we’re looking at HDD toting versions of Sony’s HDR-UX5 and HDR-UX7 DVD camcorders. We expect to see both the £648/$1,294 HDR-SR5 and £849/$1,696 HDR-SR7 up for pre-order as early as Thursday with shipments arriving sometime in June. We’re also told that a $1,200 HDR-CX7 camcorder should be launched at the same time (sorry no pics). It will record directly to Memory Stick and is billed as the “smallest high-definition camcorder on the market.” Take that Sanyo. Biggie pics for zooming in on the detailed specs in the gallery below.

Sanyo announces Xacti S70

Filed under:

Sanyo has a new point and shoot digicam out recently in the form of the Xacti S70, which replaces the previous S60. The S70 doesn’t offer any particularly distinguishing features: the 7-megapixel sensor, 3x zoom lens, 2.5-inch LCD, 250 shot battery life, and VGA movie recording mode could describe dozens of other consumer cams on the market right now. The only real plus side is that it’s packed into a relatively small, albeit forgettable, silver casing. It’s looking like Sanyo’s only option for perking our interest in this model is to set the price at rock bottom levels, although as of now we know nothing about pricing or availability.

KTF’s surveillance canine beams snapshots via HSDPA

It just makes sense that the same Korean provider that offered up a pet translator service would attempt to give back to the owners, as KTF has launched a robotic puppy that just melts the hearts of gizmo-lovin’ gals abroad. Specifically, it garners a crowd of individuals wherever it’s at, and then pulls double duty as an undercover surveillance agent, snapping mobile images and channeling them straight to your cellphone via HSDPA. For the paranoid ‘rents in the crowd, this here ought to be a perfect way to monitor what really goes down in the house while you’re away for the weekend, and while it’s no guard dog per se, the evidence this bad boy captures could indeed be quite frightening. Kodak 1881 concept cam takes discreet snaps, is not discreet

Apparently designed so Flava Flav could secretly record his travels back in time, the “1881″ concept designer Lindsey Pickett showed at a recent Kodak design exhibition is a bold new entry in the uber-competitive non-existent camera / locket space. The foldable cam takes snaps just by squeezing the case, or you can crack it open and line things up on the dual LCD screens. Pickett also tried to capture some of that old-school photo locket vibe by setting those the screens to auto-play the internal memory when opened, which’ll keep you entertained during the frequent rest breaks you’ll have to take while lugging this thing around on your neck. No specs to be had, since the 1881 is just a concept, but first Kodak and Pickett need to figure out how to build a camera smaller than a manhole cover.

BenQ’s (minor) upgrade to the DC C1000, the ten megapixel C1050

Filed under:

Continuing on with the minor camera updates today, it looks like BenQ is readying the replacement to the C1000, the C1050. They’ve bumped the screen on the 10.1 megapixel shooter to 2.5-inches (a whopping .1-inch up from the C1000) and the optical zoom to 5x (up from 3x), and dropped the internal memory down to 9MB from 24MB for some reason, but other than that, this is basically the C1000 all over again, all five ounces of it. No official product shot yet, so here’s a photo of the C1000 — unless BenQ’s decided to get crazy on us, we’ll bet the C1050 looks just like it. Jeez, people, haven’t you heard of silent upgrades?

Minox drops 10.1 megapixel update to the DC8122, the DC1022

Filed under:

While it’s not like Minox has exactly cracked the upper echelon of camera brands, the German company has been pumping out solid shooters for a while now (and some, well, not-so-solid). The DC1022, announced today, is based on the well-received DC8122, and retains most of the same basic specs while updating the CCD to 10.1 megapixels and reducing the thickness to an even 1-inch. Other than that, you’re basically looking at the 8122: 2.8-inch LCD, 6x optical zoom, 0.8-inch macro ability, digital image stabilization, VGA video, and 32MB of built-in memory, along with the obligatory SD slot. No info on pricing or expected availability, but we’ve ended every other Minox post with a prediction of “cheap” and we haven’t been wrong yet.

Casio’s Exilim Hi-Zoom EX-V7 reviewed

Filed under:

While we could the quality issues coming, it’s hard not to hope that somehow Casio was able to cram a 7.2-megapixel sensor and a 7x optical zoom into a point-and-shoot enclosure that produced astounding (or at least good) results. Sadly, we’re still waiting for that day, as reviewers at PopPhoto deflated our hopes that a wicked zoom could in fact be stuffed into an ultracompact without sacrificing image quality. As expected, the sleek, sexy frame of the Exilim Hi-Zoom EX-V7 was adored, the anti-shake technology was appreciated, and the choice to rely on H.264 compression in video mode was praised, but those tidbits weren’t enough to overcome the “shaky” feel, questionably designed menus, unsteady cradle, and most importantly, the “pitiful” results. It was noted that the 7x zoom was quite impressive when shooting video clips, and without concern to the actual images produced by the EX-V7, the digicam was shown an “A” rating; unfortunately, the overall score was lowered to a (generous) “C” with all things considered, but feel free to hit the read link and read the painful writeup for yourself.

XS-Drive 2 Smart 2300 offers up digital photo storage

When lugging around dozens of unlabeled flash cards just won’t suffice, there’s nothing better to have around than a memory card-lovin’ portable hard drive. Joining quite a few others in this growing arena is the XS-Drive 2 Smart 2300, which rocks anywhere between 40GB to 160GB of internal hard drive space, a swank OLED display, two hours of battery life, USB 2.0 connectivity, and a “simplistic two button control scheme.” Additionally, you’ll find support for CF, MicroDrive, MSDuo, MSPro, SD, miniSD, microSD, SDHC, MMC, MMC, xD, and a host of lesser used flash card formats, and you can also utilize the built-in GUI to delete unwanted pictures before slapping it back in the digicam. Best of all, the XS-Drive 2 Smart 2300 is purportedly available right now, and considering the relatively low £99 ($197) asking price for the 60GB rendition, it doesn’t look like a half bad option for consolidating.

BenQ’s DC X725 cam: too skinny for the megapixels

Filed under:

Step aside X720, you’re out. BenQ just replaced you with the 12.5-mm DC X725 stainless steel shooter in choice of black, red, pearl and silver. Funny enough, while they tell us that it features a 1/2.5-inch CCD, BenQ fails to mention anything about the pixel resolution. Could it be that compact camera manufacturers have learned that pixel count has pretty much gone the way of the “digital zoom” spec on modern shooters? Doubtful. Probably just too busy with their legal woes to notice the omission. Let’s assume 7.2 megapixels like its predecessor. BenQ does manage to tell us a bit about the Pentax (Super Multi-Coating) 3x optical zoom lens, Super Shake Free stabilization, ISO 1600 sensitivity (4000 in recording mode), and SD/SDHC card support. Oh, and BenQ says it’s available worldwide too, only the fail to mention a price. Pfff. Pic of the backside looking out, after the break.

Pandigital’s PAN-150 digiframe hits the 15-inch mark

‘Twas only a matter of time before digital photo frames began creeping up in size to go toe-to-toe with our LCD monitors, and Pandigital is helping the cause with its PAN-150. The 15-inch behemoth will soon be vying for table space as it shows off your high-resolution shots and gives that bedroom LCD TV a run for its money. Specs wise, it’ll reportedly sport a 1,024 x 768 resolution, 256MB of internal memory, built-in USB port, MPEG1/4, AVI, and MP3 playback support, integrated stereo speakers, and of course, the ability to play nice with SD, xD, MSPro, MSDuo, CF, and MMC flash cards. Best of all, however, isn’t the stylish wood frame or the bundled bragging rights, but the respectable $299 pricetag combined with a launch date within the week.
