Olympus teases with more P-1 information

Filed under:

With all the new love for Olympus’ new E-510 and E-410 DSLRs, many of us were left wondering about the supposed successor to the E-1 professional model we peeped in prototype back in September. Well, in hopes of alleviating our angst, Olympus dropped a few hints and pictures of their new professional Four Thirds system coming “later this year.” Expected to carry a P-1 moniker, the new shooter brings a rotating/flip-out screen, chunky grip, and lower height accompanied by four new lenses, three of which will feature the new ultra-high speed Supersonic Wave Drive focusing system. Unfortunately, we still don’t have pricing or any real specifications to bring you. And with Olympus unable to even settle on a final product name, well, maybe we shouldn’t get our hopes up for anything too soon.

Digital Foci’s Photo Safe compact storage for photogs

Digital Foci is back with another digital photo storage solution for photographers. This time, instead of that big LCD found on their own Picture Porter and similar photo previewing/storage devices from Aigo, Epson, and Canon, Digital Foci keeps the, uh, focus on compact portability. The new Photo Safe line-up comes in 40/80/120GB capacities and features a user-replaceable Li-Ion battery that can be recharged when slung from either USB or the mains. Doubtful they’ll match the performance of the NextoCF Ultra but they easily best it in price: starting at just $139 when the Photo Safe ships next month, April.

Kodak EasyShare Z885 and Z712 IS

Filed under:

These two new additions to Kodak’s EasyShare line are targeted to consumers who seek a user-friendly interface, wallet-friendly prices, and of course, a good photo. The 8.1-megapixel Z885 packs in 5x optical zoom, up to 8000 ISO, 2.5-inch indoor / outdoor display, and 10 automatic smart scene modes for a modest price of $199.95. If you’re lookin’ to go wannabe-DSLR and have an extra $100 to spare, the 7.1-megapixel Z712 IS will deliver a 2.5-inch display, 10x optical zoom, image stabilization, and 0.26-second click-to-capture speed. These newbies have yet to prove their worth, but we can at least appreciate that they won’t stab you in your pockets and they’re pretty straightforward — no fancy-pants extras to get in the way. The Z712 IS will be available in April with the Z885 coming out sometime in May.

Kodak’s new EasyShare C613 and C763 keep it slim and cheap

Filed under:

Kodak’s hitting all the budget-friendly sweet spots today. Alongside those “fancy” Z712 IS and Z885 shooters, these new C613 and C763 (pictured) EasyShare cameras are positively barebones, with $120 and $180 pricetags, respectively. Luckily, Kodak didn’t do away with specs entirely: the C613 sports a 6.2 megapixel CCD and 3X zoom, while the C763 bumps it up to 7.1 megapixels. The screens are particularly impressive for the prices, at 2.4-inch and 2.5-inches. ISO, in about the 800 range, naturally isn’t as notable as that of the Z series we saw earlier, and there’s no optical image stabilization to keep your pics blur-free, but the combination of low price, small size and beefy megapixels should garner this pair a bit of success when they drop in April. Peep the C613 after the break.

Giraffe video conferencing robot to weird employees out

So your boss is home sick today, huh? On a business trip you say? Think twice. Thanks to HeadThere’s new developments in Giraffe video conferencing robots, people can literally be in two places at once (and will look extremely creepy in one of those places). The 5-foot, 8-inch-tall Giraffe robot presents an awkward alternative to traditional video conferencing by creating an actual physical presence — it even adjusts to a 4-foot, 5-inch height in case you interact with someone who’s seated. Using special software and a webcam, the user can operate their robotic representative from a remote location: you can tilt the head, er, 14.1-inch LCD screen up and down and maneuver the robot about the office, while taking in sights and sounds with a 2.1-megapixel, 8x zoom camera and microphone. You definitely won’t be shuffling through papers or sipping free coffee, however, you’d be able to chat with / micromanage your employees and coworkers thanks to a high-volume speaker placed appropriately where a mouth would be. Now word yet on availability, but we do know that one robo-doppelganger will run you somewhere between $1,800 and $3,000 (those pre-ordering will receive a discount),

HP’s Photosmart R837 makes you and your pets pretty

Filed under:

Prepare for an onslaught of digital camera news today as the big PMA show officially swings its doors wide. Out bright and early comes HP’s new Photosmart R837. It packs a 7.2 megapixel CCD, 3x zoom, anti-shake, and 3-inch LCD with SD expansion and the ability to shoot VGA quality video at 24fps — nothing less than ordinary in today’s marketplace. However, this cam is here to take your desolate insecurities to a new level by offering a full range of HP touch-up technologies such as blemish removal, slimming effects, and get this: a new “pet-eye fix.” Does it work? Oddly, yes. According to Laptop Magazine’s review, the pet-eye fix made they eyes of their cats appear “lifelike, without the eerie glow.” They go on to call the R837 a “solid choice” for first time digital shooters… and readers of Cosmo who compulsively frame photos of their cats, naturally. For just $229, even your lonely Aunt Betty can find friends on MySpace after the R837’s April launch.

Sony’s Cybershot G1 is finally official

var digg_url = ‘http://www.digg.com/gadgets/Sony_s_Cybershot_G1_camera_with_WiFi_3_5_inch_LCD_and_2GB_of_memory’; Ah, there you are sweet, sweet Cybershot G1. No surprises here, just like we saw in those leaked catalog images weeks ago, the G1 brings a range of novelties like 802.11b/g WiFi, 2GB of on-board storage, biggie 3.5-inch LCD, DLNA compliance, and slideshows with music. Hell, we hear it’ll even take pictures and record MPEG-4 video in VGA quality courtesy of the 6 megapixel sensor. With FCC approval out of the way earlier today, the cam is certain to hit on schedule in April for a $600 MSRP. Too bad the LCD isn’t touch-sensitive like a couple of Sony’s other Cybershot cams. We’ll try to get hands on with it later in the day from the PMA show in Vegas baby, Las Vegas. Stay tuned.

Westinghouse adds to Digital Photo Frame series

Out of the flurry of digital picture frames you’ve seen here, you may remember Westinghouse’s DPF-0701 from last summer — we definitely noticed some improvements in the 4 new units they’ve added to their Digital Photo Frame line. The new frames are the 7-inch DPF-0702 at $119, the 8-inch DPF-0802 with an 800 x 600 resolution at $179, the 10.2-inch DPF-1021 with an 800 x 480 resolution at $249, and the 14.1-inch DPF-1411 at $399. All four models have two USB ports for file transfers, 128MB of built-in memory, and are compatible with CF I and II, MD, MS, Pro, MS Duo, MS Pro Duo, SD, MMC, and XD memory cards. They all support JPEG, AVI Motion JPEG, MPEG-1 and MPEG-4, and use MosaicView technology that now features slideshows with variable transitions and speeds in addition to its initial mosaic function. If you want one, feel free to hold your breath, since Westinghouse’s new litter of DPFs should ship sometime this month.

HP’s Photosmart M537 and M437 low-end shooters

Filed under:

In addition to their R837 pet shooter, HP also unveiled their Photosmart M537 and M437 point-and-shoot cams this morning. The M537 brings a 6 megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom, 2.5-inch LCD and HP’s steady photo anti-shake technology. The M437 drops the sensor to 5 megapixels and scales back the LCD to a wee 2-inches, otherwise it’s the M537’s feature equivalent. Both cameras can run off standard AA batteries if you want to make the little babies and Al Gore cry. Expected to hit the virgin hands of digicam noobs this April for $130 and $110 for the M537 and M437, respectively. Yeah, that’s pretty cheap.

NXP Software’s swGPS SnapSpot tech for GPS photo tagging

Sony got a good jump on the industry with its proprietary GPS-CS1 device for geotagging Cybershot pics, but NXP Software’s new SnapShot is playing catch-up at PMA this week, and it looks like the company has a compelling offer. SnapShot reduces power consumption of GPS tagging by separating the capture and the processing of GPS signals, allowing the chip to be only turned on for a short time while obtaining a signal, and then having that data processed by your computer to be imbedded in your photos as they download. Of course, this means you’ll have to run your pics through the swGPS software, which can be a bit of a hassle, but no more a hassle than having a GPS module half your battery life. Unfortunately, what NXP doesn’t have is a product: they’re showing of a credit card-sized accessory module, which could also be easily embedded into a camera, but they’re leaving it up to other manufacturers to take the ball and run with it. Until then, we always have our hacks.
